Civil Law

Civil law is the law of daily life: a contract not honored, a harm suffered, a rented home, a disputed property, money lent and never returned. These disputes can seem too ordinary to consult about. Until they fester.

The firm advises and represents individuals in these situations, with one constant principle: first measure what the dispute is really worth, legally and humanly, then choose a proportionate route, from a formal letter to a lawsuit.

Typical work

Contracts and obligations
Non-performance, defects of consent, termination and damages, under the law of obligations and contracts.
Civil liability
Compensation for personal injury and material damage: accidents, fault, negligence.
Real estate
Ownership and co-ownership disputes, land-title questions, property sales.
Residential leases
Landlord and tenant relations: unpaid rent, notice, recovery of premises.
Recovery between individuals
Unreturned loans, acknowledgments of debt, bounced cheques.

How the firm works

The first step is always the same: establish the facts and gather the evidence. In civil matters, one document is worth more than ten testimonies. Contracts, receipts, messages, formal reports: the initial consultation assesses what your file can realistically obtain.

The route is then proportionate to the stakes: an amicable approach, a formal notice, urgent interim proceedings where justified, a full lawsuit where necessary. At each stage you know the cost, the likely duration and the odds.

Common questions

My dispute involves a modest amount. Is it worth consulting?

A consultation answers exactly that question before you spend anything. Sometimes a single lawyer’s letter resolves the problem. Sometimes the best decision is not to act. Either way, you decide with full knowledge.

I have no written contract. Have I already lost?

No, but proof becomes the heart of the case. Messages, bank transfers, witnesses, partial written evidence: many elements can be mobilized, and their weight is assessed case by case.

How long do civil proceedings take?

It depends on the nature of the dispute, the court and any appeals. Some urgent procedures conclude in weeks. A full trial is measured in months. An honest estimate is given at the outset, then kept up to date.
